All Purpose Steak Marinade

Posted In: Beef | Recipes

Just in time for your Labor Day Weekend gathering, I bring to you the perfect, easy, all-purpose marinade to make any steak flavorful and delicious!

Our local grocery store (shout out to Major Market!) makes a KILLER per-marinated Tri-Tip that I absolutely love. It is our go-to meal anytime we have any sort of special occasion, whether it be a birthday, summer holiday, even Christmas dinner!

Although I don’t see myself ending that tradition anytime soon, I decided to try my hand at creating a similar and equally tasty marinade for any cut of meat. I do try to eat grass-fed beef when it is affordable and available, so I wanted to have a marinade in my repertoire that I could use on my own accord.

Since we will be out of town for Labor Day Weekend, we had my mom and brother over for a pre-holiday cookout and so I could test the marinade recipe out. I would say it was a success when they asked mid-meal if we were dining on the tri-tip from Major Market…mission accomplished!

Ingredients:

For a 2.5 lb. Tri-Tip…

  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp salt (or 1/2 tsp each of Trader Joe’s Season Salt and Onion salt)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp rosemary
Instructions:
  1. Add all ingredients to a blender/bullet and blitz it up
  2. Add steak and marinade to a large plastic bag and let sit in fridge for 2-8 hours.
  3. Grill to your liking (or see note below) and let the steak rest for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain and serve!

Travis’s tips on grilling: (It seems most people have their preferred way of grilling a “perfect” steak, and it varies greatly depending on your grill and cut of meat!)

  • (For a large piece of meat like this tri-tip) Heat the grill on medium high and cook for about 10 minutes on one side, then 8 on the other, closing the lid between flips. Place steak on the top rack of the grill and reduce heat to medium. Close lid and cook for an additional 20 minutes.

We served our All Purpose Marinade Tri-Tip with all.the.sides. I made my Twice Baked Potato and Cauliflower Casserole, my mom made her famous “Tomato Pie,” my brother made a summery fresh Corn Salad, and we added a pop of green by throwing some asparagus on the grill with the tri-tip. My mouth is watering just thinking about it all now!

If you are looking for ideas for your Labor Day cookout, I highly recommend this simple, all-purpose steak marinade. You won’t regret it! It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to add that cauliflower casserole or these Grain Free Sugar Cookies (all decked out in red, white, and blue) to your menu!

Have a great, safe, and fun weekend, everyone!
