With Easter just over a week away, I am getting in the spirit the best way I know how-creating Easter Baskets for my family! I am big on traditions, but my husband and I are still working on creating long-standing traditions as we approach each holiday as relative “newlyweds”.
I remember some fun Easter traditions our family had when my siblings and I were younger, but ever since we outgrew the egg hunt stage, our traditions pretty much petered out. These days, our Easter Sunday consists of a very low key brunch that doesn’t feel much different than any other Sunday. Wha wha wha, right?
The true meaning of Easter is inspiring and joyful! I just feel like so much of the excitement of Easter is dependent on having little kids around and, to be honest, the void in our lives is even more apparent this year than any other. But I am not going to wallow in sadness as we head into a cheerful spring-time celebration!
Instead, I am going to be grateful for my family and the chance to be together to enjoy each other and some yummy food…and mimosas should help! Another way I knew I could get into the spirit was to create “Grown-Up Easter Baskets” for my family! (A trip to Target can always cheer me right up!) I knew I wanted to do it on the cheap, but with some useful items that my mom, brother, and husband could enjoy.
Brainstorming ideas made me realize an Easter basket could be like a bigger and better Christmas stocking, and I started to get pretty excited! While Easter can be geared mostly toward lots of candy and treats, I know my family wouldn’t want a basket filled with sugar. So instead, I went for some treats and goodies in addition to some relevant/functional things for my practical, semi-minimalistic family members. Even the “basket” will be able to be re-used for something other than Easter! 🙂
I did my shopping at Hobby Lobby and Target, but I will also link similar items from Amazon so you can shop from home! (Is there anything better than shopping from your couch? Plus, a trip to Hobby Lobby AND Target in one day left me feeling rather broke and lacking in the self-control department 😉 )
Here’s everything I got for right around $125 total (for 3 full baskets). I really could have gone crazy and so many other items looked like fun additions as I did my shopping, but I am happy with the random, fun, and functional items I ended up with!
Guys (Husband & Brother) Basket
Here’s the breakdown:
For the men in your life:
- Galvanized Tub (from Hobby Lobby) $5.99
- Easter Grass (Hobby Lobby) .99
- Fun Socks (Target) $6
- Gum $2
- Mints $2
- Carmel Cadbury Eggs (the BEST Easter Candy if you ask me!) $3.50
- Krave Jerky $5
- Nuts $5
- Annies Gummy Bunnies (the bunny factor was too cute to pass up for an Easter basket!) $3
- Burt’s Bees Chapstick $1.50 each
- Deodorant $4 (seems silly, but this is the type of thing my husband and brother hate to have to go to the store to buy)
- iTunes Gift Card- $10-$15 (Optional something extra for the movie/music lovers in your life)
Here it is all put together! I think this is the perfect size with just the right number of items for a little something fun but not over the top. After all, we are all grown-ups on a monthly budget! 😉
Ladies Basket
I could have gone so many different directions with this one! I thought about making a “themed” basket for mom, like all coffee related items, or a spa/relaxation basket, or a gardener’s dream basket, or a cook’s kitchen basket etc….But I ended up going with a variety of fun, Spring-y items that caught my eye. The sky is the limit on these!
Here’s the Breakdown:
For the Mom or the woman in your life:
- Wire Basket (On Sale at Hobby Lobby) $10.50
- Easter Grass .99
- Cadbury Caramel Eggs (my mom’s favorite…like mother, like daughter) $3.50
- Annie’s Graham Cracker Bunnies (Again, perfect for an Easter Basket!) $3
- EOS Lip Balm $3
- Hearth and Hand brand candle $12 (a little pricey but my mom and I love the show Fixer Upper and the smell was too good to pass up)
- Specialty Soap (made by a friend) $3
All of the rest of the items came from the “dollar” section at Target…gets me every time!
- Easter Kitchen Towel $3
- Garden Tools (x3) $3 – Loved the colors and my mom is pretty much constantly gardening in her retirement!
- Happy Easter Sign $3 (We both love having little seasonal decorations to put on our hearth)
Here’s the final look:
I know my mom will love all of these spring themed, slightly indulgent, and tasty goodies!
Other Basket Filler Ideas:
- Bath salts/fancy lotions
- Coffee Mug
- Water Bottle
- Wine
- Comfy Socks/Jammies
- Home-baked goodies
- Specialty Jams/Jarred items
There are so many options! I think the trick is finding a good variety of items that fits the recipients’ personality well, and not going too far overboard!
I could definitely get used to this new tradition for years to come. It feels good to give gifts, and now I am looking forward to Easter so much more. There will come a time when I can dress up my little ones in their “Easter Sunday Best” and plan fun kid-centered activities like egg dying, egg hunts, kid-themed baskets, festive foods, etc, but for now, this tradition will make me (and hopefully my family) smile 🙂
What Easter traditions do you and your family have? I would LOVE to get new ideas to make our holiday even more special this year, and for years to come!
